It’s a long time in any sport or activity to go seven years without a victory. That’s what had occurred prior to Sunday for Michael Thompson on the PGA Tour. He had last tasted victory in 2013, and he badly needed this one to get him exempt for a couple more seasons and to get him into majors and the like.
He qualified for them in the end, showing a resounding amount of confidence as he crept his way toward the last few holes. With a number of potential contenders trailing from behind, he kept steady and got better as he went. He made two birdies on the final three holes- on one the 18th to put the icing on top- to demonstrate as much. His -19 finish was two strokes ahead of Adam Long, who had blazed the course with a 64 and finished fairly early in the day. Tony Finau, once again, was a major player all week but also fell apart yet again as he searched for a second Tour victory.
