49ers Acquire Jimmy Garoppolo
After the rumor mill heating up around trades for New England Patriots back up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo at the beginning of last year, it finally happened yesterday.
As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers acquired Garoppolo from New England in exchange for a 2018 second round draft pick.
This comes as a surprise to many as Garoppolo was expected to fill the shoes of Tom Brady when he decides to retire, which should be sometime in the near future as he is 40 years old.
When Garoppolo has gotten the chance to play, he has been very impressive. Drafted by the Patriots with the No. 62 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft from Eastern Illinois University, Garoppolo has totaled 690 yards on 5 TD and no interceptions. While his time on the field has been limited, he has capitalized on every chance and proven that he has a tremendous upside.
This trade surprised many as his ability as a quarterback did not matchup with what he was traded for. With all the potential this young quarterback has, many thought that it would take a lot more to trade him away to another team.
Regardless, this sets Garoppolo up for his first starting position in the NFL with the 49ers who are one of the worst teams in the league.
The 49ers have accumulated an 0-8 record with Brian Hoyer, who was released immediately following the signing of Garoppolo.
