It is one thing to throw a no-hitter, as Lucas Giolito did in the regular season. It’s a completely different thing to take the mound in a playoff game- like Tuesday’s AL Wild Card round- and nearly do the same. Though the Chicago White Sox pitcher didn’t end up recording a no-no against the Oakland Athletics, who were hosting them, he did set the stage for them to go on and win 4-1 by throwing seven innings with a lone run conceded. He had been perfect in his postseason debut, but that unraveled on him after six flawless innings.

Despite that the White Sox had gotten a pair of solo shots from Adam Engel and Yasmani Grandal and a two-run homer from Jose Abreu. That took them to victory in Game 1, putting them one win from the ALDS now. In the night cap of a busy four-game slate on the day, the New York Yankees, visiting due to having a lower seed, demolished the Cleveland Indians 12-3 to put themselves a game away from the ALDS as well. Aaron Judge hit a home run off of Shane Bieber on the fourth pitch of the game, and that two-run bomb set the tone. Gerrit Cole fanned 13 hitters in seven innings of work in which he gave up two runs. Brett Gardner, it must be pointed out, was tremendous, going 3-5 with a double and a home run in there as he drove in three. In the other two games of the day, the Houston Astros took a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins due to defensive mishaps late in the going by the hosts and the Tampa Bay Rays won 3-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays.
