The Oakland Athletics are officially AL West champions for the first time since 2013, breaking the stranglehold the Houston Astros have had on the division for the last several years on Monday night. In typical fashion, it was largely because of the Astros on this evening, as it was their loss to the Seattle Mariners that sealed it up for the Athletics.
The 6-1 loss to the Mariners meant that Oakland went from in the playoffs to being a top seed for them. Oakland did not play on Monday as they were resting ahead of a series with NL West-leading Los Angeles. As for the Astros, they remain around .500, battling to ensure they at least get a spot in this short season’s expanded edition of playoffs.
