2020 has already been a unique year, to say the least, and that is certainly going to be the case in the world of horse racing. It was announced on Tuesday that the Belmont Stakes this year would be scaled back significantly from what it typically is, with no fans being allowed, the event to take place two weeks later than planned, and for the race itself to be modified.

The usual 1 ½ miles will be replaced with a 1 1/8 mile dash this time around. On top of that, it will be the first race of he triple crown to be run this year, as both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness have rescheduled for later in the season. This is the first time the Belmont will be the first of the three and it will be the first time since 1926 that the distance has been altered. Needs must, though, so it’s all understandable.
