Brewers, Dodgers Win Divisions and Advance While Mahomes Goes Lefty
The Major League Baseball Playoffs are now set to begin after the field was finally finalized on Monday. After 162 games, there was no separating the Los Angeles Dodgers from the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago Cubs from the Milwaukee Brewers. Yesterday’s 163rd game of the season broke the ties for the NL West and Central crowns, and we now know who plays one another beginning Tuesday.
In Tuesday’s NL Wild Card Game, we will see the Chicago Cubs hosting the Colorado Rockies. The Cubs will come into the game fairly confident with Jon Lester on the mound, but they won’t be thrilled to be in the situation. The Brewers got the job done at Wrigley Field on Monday afternoon through the top of their order. Lorenzo Cain, Christian Yelich, and Ryan Braun each drove in an RBI as they won 3-1 over the Cubbies to win the NL Central and put themselves into the NLDS. It is there that they will await the winner of the aforementioned Wild Card Game.
Elsewhere, the Dodgers were hosting the Rockies in Los Angeles. And for the sixth straight season, the result ended up being the exact same: the Dodgers won the NL West. They did so thanks in large part to rookie pitcher Walker Buehler, who gave up just one hit in seven innings of dazzling work to shut down the Rockies and allow his team to put five runs on the board before exiting. Despite an attempt to rally in the ninth, the Rockies only mustered two runs and fell 5-2, putting them into the Wild Card match up with the Cubs at Wrigley. As for the victors, they will face the NL East champion Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the NLDS on Thursday after they were 10 games under .500 earlier in the season. What a turn around!
Monday Night Football this week also offered no shortage of drama, with second-year sensation Patrick Mahomes continuing to wow viewers with astonishing quarterbacking. The Kansas City Chiefs found themselves down ten points in the fourth quarter on the road to the Denver Broncos. It looked like their unbeaten run was coming to an end. But Mahomes had other ideas. The gunslinger would complete two touchdowns before time elapsed on the way toward a come-from-behind 27-23 win. The highlight of the night came when Mahomes went left-handed to convert a crucial first down during the game-winning drive. With three Broncos all over him, Mahomes, rolling to his left, saw Tyreek Hill open. Without being able to adjust his body, he threw left-handed and got it to his man, completing the first down and sparking his team’s victory. The Chiefs improved to 4-0 on the season and are 3-0 on the road. We could be looking at one of the best seasons in decades right here if they keep this up.
