Broncos’ offensive struggles prove costly again in last-minute loss to Ravens

For 56 minutes Sunday, it didn’t seem as if it mattered who was under center for the Ravens. Neither Lamar Jackson nor Tyler Huntley could find much room against Denver’s vaunted defense. The Broncos rarely bent, let alone broke.

There was just one problem for Denver: its offense couldn’t score, either.

One miraculous 15-play, 91-yard drive later, the Broncos were on the receiving end of another heartbreaking L, 10-9.

Denver is now 3-9. If it had just reached 18 points in a few of those defeats, its record would look a lot better: it would be 8-4.

The torpid offense has been the story of the Broncos’ season, and it was back in Week 13 against a Ravens side known for gift-wrapping scoring opportunities late in games.

Most notably, Russell Wilson continued to struggle. Although just five of his passes fell incomplete, he failed to record a touchdown for the fourth time this season. He fell short of the 200-yard plateau for the second straight week, as well.

The running game didn’t look much better. Denver netted 88 yards on 28 carries, for a woeful 3.1 yards per carry.

All of that led to Denver having to settle for three Brandon McManus field goals.

But thanks to that defense, Baltimore had bagged just three points in the first 56 minutes.

Huntley sliced through Denver’s defense as he accounted for almost all of the Ravens’ yards on the game-winning drive. A pair of defensive penalties helped, and eventually Huntley scampered into the end zone for a game-tying TD. Justin Tucker’s PAT gave Baltimore the lead.

It was yet another devastating defeat for the Broncos, a familiar sight for those following the team. If the offense was just slightly better, maybe it wouldn’t be such a regular event.
