CFB: Gators, Irish Win Highlight Saturday Action

It was a pretty quiet day in the world of college football this weekend. Many of the top teams, particularly in the SEC, were off due to their games being postponed due to Covid-19 cases. Also, it was quiet because of the fact that only one upset close to being major occurred. And even that was #19 SMU losing to Tulsa. Outside of that, no ranked team lost on the day, with a number of them continuing to stay unbeaten. Chief among those was Notre Dame, who outlasted Boston College to win 45-31.

The #2 Fighting Irish saw QB Ian Book throw for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns as they capitalized on a 21-point second quarter to eventually take victory over BC. Indiana, with quiet Heisman outsider candidate Michael Penix, Jr. leading them, went to 4-0 with a 24-0 win over Michigan State, while the likes of Oregon, Wisconsin, Marshall, USC, Liberty, and Northwestern all recorded wins to remain perfect for their respective seasons. Marshall’s, who are now 7-0, was extremely notable due to the fact that the tragic plane crash that changed the course of their program’s history had occurred exactly 50 years ago to the day. What a way to honor that team! The Florida Gators, who were in one of just three SEC match ups on the weekend, also got a win, defeating Arkansas 63-35. Kyle Trask threw for six (yes, 6!) touchdowns and had 356 yards as that explosive offense handed the #6 Gators, now 5-1, another win that keeps them in the final four discussion.
