CFB: Notre Dame Win, Oregon Lose

It was a fairly busy day on Friday as many college football teams got back to action a day earlier than normal. Among them were a couple of big meetings between ranked foes. Perhaps the biggest was the one between #2 Notre Dame and #19 North Carolina. When the dust had settled, it was the Fighting Irish that remained unbeaten courtesy of a 31-17 win that was anything but simple. The Tar Heels led three times- twice in the first quarter- but it was not enough. Ian Book and co. were able to lead the Irish to 17 unanswered points to seal off the win at the end of the day.

Book had one touchdown toss and racked up 279 yards passing while running back Kyren Williams surged to 123 yards on the ground and three TD’s of his own (two on the ground and one via a pass). That puts them at 9-0, and it now means they are still on course for a potential place in the College Football Playoff. Elsewhere, Iowa State, ranked at #13, defeated #17 Texas by a score of 23-20 in a showdown of ranked teams. The Longhorns led 13-7 after the first quarter, but they scored just once for the rest of the match up as the Cyclones improved to 7-2 overall. In another big game, the Oregon Ducks were shocked by in-state rivals Oregon State in a thrilling 41-38 loss. It all ended that way due to a crazy sequence of events that culminated with Beavers backup QB Chance Nolan sneaking in on 4th and goal. The Beavers outscored the Ducks 21-7 in the closing 15 minutes, somehow overturning a score that seemed to be impossible for them to come back from. Jemar Jefferson was the standout star, rushing for 226 yards on 26 carries and for two touchdowns. OSU is now 2-2 while Oregon, likely to be out of contention for a spot in the last four now, is 3-1 following the surprise loss.
