The UEFA Champions League group stage is now 2/3 of the way in the books following match day four’s completion on Wednesday night in Europe. At this stage, most teams know what they can do to advance. While some others will know they can no longer move on. Atalanta, coming off a humbling 0-5 defeat to Liverpool the last time out, went to the English champions and reignited their hopes of progression with a 0-2 away win.
Josip Illicic and Robert Gosens scored, both in the second half in a five-minute spell, and it was enough for them to pull two points behind both Liverpool and Ajax in the group standings. Elsewhere, Real Madrid grabbed a big win, defeating Inter Milan in Italy by a 0-2 score. The loss eliminated Inter from the competition and was largely a result of plenty of ill discipline. Arturo Vidal was red carded for touching the official and the hosts also conceded a penalty kick. That leaves them out, and it will put pressure on their manager, who has not had the easiest of rides since his arrival with the club.
