Football, so they say, is a game of inches. On Saturday, it was a matter of a couple of feet or so that separated Coastal Carolina and BYU. But in the end it didn’t matter if it was a foot or a million miles to the Chanticleers, who were able to grab a landmark victory for their program. The 22-17 win over the Cougars came as a result of a tackle made at the one-yard line to deny their visitors from out west. The win sees them move to 10-0 on the season, and it will surely mean they will move up from their current #18 ranking. BYU, meanwhile, are now 9-1 and will likely slide due to the outcome.
The standout performer in the game was Coastal’s running back, CJ Marable, who racked up 132 yards and two touchdowns, including the winning score (and the only scoring play in the fourth quarter). The game, which was only scheduled on Thursday due to Liberty not being able to play them, will go down as one of the finest of the season, no doubt, in what has been a very strange 2020. Elsewhere, Texas A&M, ranked #5 to begin the weekend, backed that up in a big way as they rallied in the fourth quarter to push aside Auburn 31-20. The Tigers led by six heading into the final period, but the Aggies put up 17 unanswered points to close out the game, denying Auburn an upset win that would have ended the Aggies’ chances of making it to the College Football Playoff. The other big hitters, such as Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Florida held serve on the day, continuing their hopes of making it to the prestigious four. Those that lost out and were ranked included Wisconsin (to fellow-ranked foes Indiana), Marshall, Oregon, and Washington. A couple of conference title games were also set, as the Big 12 will see Oklahoma face Iowa State and the SEC will see Alabama facing off with Florida.
