After bringing a World Series to the Chicago Cubs in his nine-year stint, the club has decided to move on from Theo Epstein as of Tuesday. This idea was suggested last month, but it became official this week as the Cubs decided to promote GM Jed Hoyer into the role of president. It is being said that Hoyer will have his deal extended as part of his promotion, as he had just a year remaining on the deal, to begin with. There are a few factors at play here.

Bleed Cubbie Blue

On the surface, it just looks like the Cubs are moving on from Epstein due to poor-ish results, but that isn’t all there it to it. The fact that Epstein was going to be due $10 million next year is also a big factor in it, so this will save them a ton of money. Epstein, who has led both the Cubs and Boston Red Sox to postseason glory, will likely find somewhere else to land simply due to his name and legacy. Just where that is remains to be seen and it may take a year or so, but he will eventually land somewhere if he’s interested in staying in the game of baseball.
