When it comes to redecorating a house, the key to a smooth and clean finish is in the preparation work. One homeowner has been left in stitches after uncovering a note that has been hiding under their wallpaper for 25 years.

Underneath the 1990s wallpaper was a cheeky note stating how they’d “eat their overalls” if the Spice Girls were still popping off in the charts by the time this wallpaper was stripped off the walls. The note reads: “It’s the 5th October 1997. If the Spice Girls are still popular next time this room is decorated, I’ll eat my overalls. By Dad.”

He wrote the cheeky note in 1997

A picture of the note has been shared on Reddit by user AnheB1818 and has racked in more than 33,000 upvotes and about 1,400 comments.

While most users laughed at the dad’s note, others shared the secret messages they’ve found in their homes when redecorating.

One user said: “I wrote my name on a basement support beam in my childhood home when we moved out.

“A few months ago I managed to get into that house and walked around.

“My handwriting of my name was exactly as I left it in 1988, 29 years ago.

“Nobody added to it, nobody removed it.”

Another user added: “My garage has the names and ages of the previous owners’ kids written on a wall.

“They were high school graduates when I bought the house so they must have done it well over a decade ago.

“I have no intention of erasing or altering it because I think it’s a kind of cool little snapshot of my house’s history.”

A third user said: “When I was a kid I put a list of all the swearwords I knew in the vent in my room.

“One day it wasn’t there – I’m guessing my parents must have found it but never said anything.

“12 years have passed but I’m still paranoid that one day they’ll bring it up.”

Commenting on the dad’s message, one user joked: “In 2050 the wallpaper is also removed. ‘If President Bieber gets re-elected, I’ll swallow my lace shorts. Dad’.”

It comes after a woman uncovered a handy note from her previous homeowner when stripping their old wallpaper off the walls.

It reads: “If you ever need to wallpaper this room again, it will take eight rolls of wallpaper. I bought just six rolls at £17 per roll on 5/12/97 and I didn’t have enough. It really p***ed me off. Jon 21/12/97.”
