In what many thought would be a rookie of the year season campaign for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, it was cut short due to a devastating ACL tear which will leave him out for the remainder of the season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Watson sustained this injury during a non-contact practice on Thursday.

Schefter added that backup quarterback Tom Savage will start against the Indianapolis Colts this upcoming week. The Texans also signed Matt McGloin to replace Watsons spot on the roster.

The Texans traded up in the last NFL draft in order to select Watson with the No. 12 overall pick and it has clearly paid off. He has been the most impressive quarterback coming out of that draft class and arguably the best player emerging from that draft class period.

This is a devastating blow to a very talented Texans team who has won the AFC South the past two years. Pretty much every part of this team was complete, they simply could not find someone to get the job done under center.

Watson, however, stepped up and went above and beyond what was expected of a rookie starting quarterback while leading the Texans to a 3-4 record. While this may not seem impressive, it gets the job done for playing in conference as weak as the AFC South.

With the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars tied for first place with a 4-3 record, the Texans are still very much in the playoff race.

The task will be much more difficult as they are going to have to do it without their young quarterback who has shown so much potential in the first seven weeks of play.
