Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will head into the 2022 United States Grand Prix looking to make history, though it was Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz who claimed top spot in qualifying yesterday and will start from the front in Austin, Texas on race day.
The Spaniard saved his best for last as he beat teammate Charles Leclerc to top spot on Saturday to claim just his second pole position of the season after he also took the honours back at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone.
Verstappen will still be looking for another victory in today’s race though to add to his collection of 12 that he’s already claimed so far this season, an amount that has already seen him claim a second successive world championship.
A 13th race win here in Texas would equal both Michael Schumacher’s and Sebastian Vettel’s pre-existing record for most wins obtained in a single F1 season, a record he could then shatter with another three races left this season after the US Grand Prix.
