A company is pushing the boundaries of mechanical keyboards by creating one with a built-in display that can beam interactive videos and images.
The upcoming product comes from Finalmouse(Opens in a new window), which makes light-weight gaming mice. The company showed off its “Centerpiece” keyboard over the weekend after previously teasing the concept in November.
The keyboard stands out by incorporating a display panel underneath the transparent keys. Finalmouse fully revealed the product in a 6-minute video(Opens in a new window) that shows off the various images the keyboard can project over the built-in screen.
According to Finalmouse, the keyboard can display “interactive skins” built using Unreal Engine 5, which will react or change when you type over the keys. This is because the Centerpiece has been built with its own CPU and GPU capable of generating the custom videos over the display.
Hence, the keyboard doesn’t need to rely on the PC’s graphics card to run the video. The user only needs to plug the product into the hardware via a single USB-C cable. Customers will be able to download and run the interactive skins through a marketplace via a new Finalmouse Steam App.

“Artists can submit skins and join an ever-growing community with infinite possibilities. Monetize your skins or submit them for free,” FinalMouse adds.
Still, the decision to incorporate so much technology into a keyboard may cause concerns about its durability. However, Finalmouse says the product has been designed to withstand plenty of abuse and intense typing.

To build the keyboard, Finalmouse partnered with mechanical key switch provider Gateron(Opens in a new window). The company adds that the typing experience over the Centerpiece should produce a sound akin to “soft marble raindrops.”
It remains unclear what kind of display technology FinalMouse is using for the keyboard. But surprisingly, the company managed to keep costs down. Finalmouse says the Centerpiece will be $349 when it launches early next year.
