A few years ago, Boxing fans and UFC fans though that they would never see a fight between Mayweather and Conor McGregor, but it happened.
Mayweather has said on multiple occasions that he would be able to fight in the octagon, but has never made any serious comments on actually going through with it.
“Exactly what I said is this: If I could make over a billion dollars before, I could do it again,” Mayweather told FightHype.com. “If I chose to get in the UFC and fight three fights or fight four fights and then fight Conor McGregor, I could make a billion dollars. Which I can. I could do it in three fights or even four fights—I could make a billion dollars. If I choose to get in the Octagon and fight.”
Mayweather added in that interview that he would not come out of retirement to fight in the octagon, but White has said that there have been talks between the two parties.
Mayweather, who is 50-0 in his career, would be risking a lot coming out of retirement and fighting in the UFC. It would expose him to a whole range of new techniques and conditions that he is not used to.
Regardless, it would promise him yet another big payday whatever the outcome was.
“We’re talking to Floyd about doing a UFC deal,” White said on Dec. 20, per Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com. “It’s real. He was talking about [boxing] McGregor. Was that real? Have you heard Floyd talk about many things that aren’t real? He usually tips his hand when he’s in the media, and then that s–t ends up happening.
“We’re interested in doing something with Floyd. Everything is a realistic possibility.”
The one reason the fight in the ring took so long to come to fruition was because of the money. Above all, the money needs to be there is this fight ever wants to become a reality.
