Georgia and Alabama Prevail To Set An All SEC National Championship
With all the scrutiny the SEC has received this year, they shut up all the naysayers and doubters last night n the first round of the college football playoff.
In the Rose Bowl, what proved to be one of the best college football games in recent memory, the Georgia Bulldogs overcame what seemed to be impossible odds to take down the Oklahoma Sooners.
The Sooners jumped out in this game, building an early 31-17 lead heading into the half.
The first snap of the second half set the tone for the duration as Nick Chubb took handoff up the middle 50 yards to the house to cut the Sooners lead to 31-24.
In what looked like an identical run, Sony Michael took a 41-yard run to the house to even the score at 31.
The two teams would trade touchdowns and turnovers until they eventually made their way to a second overtime with the score even at 48. In perhaps what will be the most memorable play in the entire game, Lorenzo Carter blocked a potential go-ahead field goal.
This was all the Bulldogs needed as they would march down the field and cap off an amazing game with a Michael direct snap touchdown to secure a 54-48 victory.
The Cotton Bowl matchup between the Clemson Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide lacked the excitement that the Rose Bowl entertained.
This game was a one-sided one, with the Crimson Tide cominating in every aspect of the game.
The Tigers did not even score a touchdown in the game, they only had two field goals totaling six points on the night.
“This game was about our identity as a team,” head coach Nick Saban said. “I don’t think anybody would doubt our relentless attitude out there. We had a warrior-like mentality.”
This mentality clearly paid off as they made the No. 1 team in the country look like they were lost.
There are two takeaways from last night.
- The college football playoff committee got it right. Leaving Alabama out would have been a disservice to college football as a whole as they proved that they were more than qualified to be in the playoff.
- The SEC is the best conference in the country. There is just simply no refuting this. The national championship showcases two teams from this conference. Plain and simple, end of story.
