The German Bundesliga wrapped up its first ‘matchday’ back on Monday night as Bayer Leverkusen brushed aside Werder Bremen to win 1-4 on the road. Kai Havertz, a young player with tremendous potential that is being linked to a number of massive clubs across Europe, was the standout as he started as a striker for the visitors.

He scored twice inside five minutes (28th and 33rd minutes) to put his team ahead both times. Gebre Selassie had scored in between, but following Havertz’s second, it was all Leverkusen. Two goals, from Mitchell Weiser and Kerem Demirbay, in the second half saw them run out with an easy-looking win. With the win, they moved up to fifth in the standings, just a point off the coveted Champions League. They are a full eight behind Bayern at the top, so a title run is very unlikely. Bremen remains in the dreaded relegation zone, nine points from full safety.
