At the age of 42, Jim Herman didn’t expect to be contending for victories on the PGA Tour. Especially since he had been playing pretty poorly prior to this week’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro. And his play in the first two rounds of the tournament didn’t exactly show he could contend, either. In fact, he barely made the cut to even play on the weekend.
But he took full advantage of making it as he went ridiculously low on Saturday with a 61. He would follow that up on Sunday with a 63, coming from four strokes behind at one stage to surge through the field and record an incredible third win on Tour. He finished the tournament at -21, one shot ahead of Billy Horschel. But after Friday he was at -4. Just a remarkable turnaround and win for someone, that even in a bit of a ‘weaker’ field, just was not expected to do very much. He had missed the cut in over half of the 18 events (11) he had played in this year, underlining how special this result was.
