Houston Astros Win First World Series In Franchise History
For the first time in Houston Astros history, they are World Series champs after a 5-1 game 7 victory last night in Los Angeles.
Coming only nine weeks after Hurricane Harvey, this could not have come at at a better time for the city of Houston. In a city that is still struggling to recover from one of the most devastating hurricanes the United States have ever seen, this World Series bring light to the city.
“You know what, Houston?” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said in an interview on the FOX broadcast. “You’re a championship city.”
This win marks the biggest in franchise history. Coming in a decisive game seven on the road, the Astros came ready to play right off the bat.
Los Angeles starting pitcher Yu Darvish had his second disappointing performance, exiting the game after only 1 ⅔ innings and giving up five runs in the process.
This was the only cushion that the Astros needed going forward as the two runs they scored in the first inning and the three added in the second inning off of Darvish were the only they scored for the remainder of the game.
The Astros came out swinging and made the Dodgers make plays which was the difference maker in this game seven.
Alex Bregman reached on a throwing error from Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger which scored George Springer. Jose Altuve drove Bregman in by virtue of a groundout to first base.
The third run of the game for the Astros came in the third inning from an infield ground out from Lance McCullers Jr which brought in Brian McCann.
The final two runs the Astros put on the board came as the loudest from a two-run home run from Springer who would later be named World Series MVP.
This gave the Astros a comfortable 5-0 lead. The only run the Dodgers would put up came in the bottom of the sixth inning on an Andre Ethier single that brought in Joc Pederson.
One of the best highlights of the night did not come on the field of play, but instead after the Astros won. Astros shortstop Carlos Correa proposed to his now-fiance while being interviewed live on television.
Overall, this is franchise altering season for the Houston Astros. As for the Dodgers, they will return next year as the favorite to take home the World Series.
