Manchester City are chasing a third straight Premier League title as they go into the 2022-23 season.
Pep Guardiola’s side became champions last season by a single point as they dramatically pipped Liverpool to the title despite nearly slipping up on the final day.
That result saw them defend their 2020-21 title which was picked up more comfortably after they finished 12 points clear of second-place Manchester United.
Going into the new season, Man City are slight favourites to be crowned champions again and will become one of few sides to win three straight Premier League titles if they pull it off.
How many teams have won three Premier League titles in a row?
Since the Premier League era began in 1992, only one club have won the title three times in a row and they have done so twice.
Manchester United first completed the elusive hat-trick of silverware in 2001 when they beat Arsenal to the top-flight title for a third consecutive season.
Then after failing to win the Premier League for three straight seasons between 2003 and 2006, Sir Alex Ferguson guided the Red Devils to another three consecutive league titles that culminated in a 2008-09 triumph.
Manchester City only became the second club in the Premier League era to win consecutive league titles when they did so in 2019.
Guardiola’s side were unable to complete the league hat-trick on that occasion, however, with Liverpool comfortably claiming the 2019-20 title.
The Reds will be looking to again deny City a third straight title in 2022-23 and are tipped to be their closest challengers.
Teams that have won three Premier League titles in a row:
- Manchester United (1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-01)
- Manchester United (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09)
How many teams have won three English top-flight titles in a row?
Before the Premier League was born, the Football League First Division boasted a rich history of successful clubs.
Huddersfield Town were the first to win three straight titles when they finished first in 1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26.
After that, Arsenal also won a hat-trick of titles between 1932 and 1935 with Liverpool the next and last to complete the feat in 1984.
