I Took Turmeric Shots Every Day for 1 Week, and Here’s How My Body Reacted
If you’re looking for one of the best superfoods in the world, then you’ve probably heard the word ‘turmeric’ get thrown around one too many times, and that’s because it’s true! Turmeric carries many benefits that target not only your physical well-being but also your mental health.
For one, turmeric contains a substance called curcumin that helps fight chronic inflammation just as effectively as some anti-inflammatory drugs. It also helps lower the risk of heart disease, the number one killer in the world by improving the function of the endothelium, which is responsible for regulating blood pressure, blood clotting, and other factors. Now when it comes to the consumption of turmeric, the possibilities are endless. Adding turmeric to a curry recipe is barely scratching the surface with this superfood. You can use it to make golden milk lattes, protein bites, and many other meals. It can also be applied topically by making a turmeric face mask.
Gina’s Turmeric Challenge Experience
Gina Florio, a contributor at Pop Sugar challenged herself to take one homemade turmeric shot for seven consecutive days to test the benefits of it and to see if the record holds true. Below is the recipe she followed as well as the good and the bad results that came out of her one week experiment.
Homemade Turmeric Shot Recipe
- 1 tablespoon of ground turmeric
- a pinch of black pepper (to help with absorption)
- half of a lemon (freshly squeezed)
- coconut water to fill the brim
Day 1 and Day 2
The first couple of days consisted of changes in her bowel movements and digestion overall. More specifically, she said, “I was suddenly running to the bathroom two or three times a day… It felt like I was in the middle of a detox.”
She also described the unpleasant taste of the turmeric shot, especially when mixed with black pepper and coconut water. She explained, “Those flavors just do not mix if you ask me. I had to have something at arm’s length to chew on right after I took the shot, like a spoonful of coconut yogurt or peanut butter toast.”
Day 3, Day 4, and Day 5
By the middle of the week, she noticed a difference in her energy levels. She said, “I don’t know if it was because I felt lighter from all the bathroom trips, but whatever it was, I had a lot of energy in the a.m.” with “pep in my step every morning” she adds.
Day 6 and Day 7
At the end of the week, she saw a drastic change in her workout recovery time. She said, “I had a particularly difficult lower-body session at one point during the week, which left me pretty sore the next morning. But I noticed that this soreness faded away much quicker than usual…It was like my muscles were building and getting stronger at a faster rate” and she realized the anti-inflammatory benefits took effect in her body by this point.
One of the main issues Gina encountered was doing the turmeric challenge in conjunction with intermittent fasting. She had tummy aches from taking the turmeric shot with an empty stomach, which didn’t happen when she had a full meal before ingestion.
Overall, she saw improvements in her energy levels and muscle recovery from the turmeric shots. She also experienced drawbacks of making frequent bathroom trips more than usual and stomach pains while simultaneously doing intermittent fasting. She said, “I’m not sure I’ll continue taking these shots every single day” but it left her curious if she were to continue taking turmeric using other methods. She said, “I have a feeling it would do wonders for my recovery time outside of the gym in the long run.”
If Gina’s experience inspired you, and you’re looking to incorporate turmeric into your everyday diet, taking shots isn’t the only way to do it.
