Jets/Darnold Era Ends

The New York Jets’ era with Sam Darnold under center is officially over after Monday’s announcement that the team was going to be moving the quarterback on in exchange for three picks. Those three draft picks include a 2021 sixth-rounder as well as a second and a fourth from the 2022 edition. The team he’ll be landing with is the Carolina Panthers, who are also looking to shore up their QB position. As for the Jets, the time was simply right for them to move.

Sources indicated that they were considering keeping him for the fourth season and pairing him with a rookie that they would presumably draft, but in the end, a fresh start is what was decided upon. Carolina likely hasn’t found the ultimate answer to their plans, either, as they have stated that they still will keep their options open for this upcoming draft as well. Darnold is 13-25 overall as a starter and has a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 45-39. 2020 was his toughest year yet, with him being deemed to have the lowest passer rating of any of the 36 QB’s that qualified for such numbers. Maybe a change of scenery is just what he needed, however, as he did come out of college with tons of promise.
