Judge Picks Up Wrist Injury, Set to Miss Three Weeks
Coming into Friday, the New York Yankees find themselves 4.5 games behind dreaded rivals Boston in the American League East standings after a 7-2 win over the Kansas City Royals and a Red Sox loss to the Minnesota Twins. However, that victory for the Yankees over the Royals was not without its cost. The win came with some bad news in the form of star outfielder Aaron Judge picking up a wrist fracture after being hit by a pitch.
In the very first inning of the game, Judge found himself in 3-2 count against pitcher Jakob Junis. Junis’ pitch got away from him a little, and it struck Judge at 93 MPH. It didn’t appear to bother the hulking slugger too much after the initial pain, with him coming back to hit and reach base via a single two innings later. But by the time his third plate appearance was due, he was taken out of the game.
And according to the team, the MRI showed that Judge indeed had a wrist fracture. Furthermore, it’s being said at the bottom that he will be out for at least three weeks. The good news, if there is any, is that it is considered a ‘chip’ fracture, which is easier to recover from. While just as painful, it’s thought he can get back into the lineup before way too long. Quick parallels will be made to Freddie Freeman, who was struck similarly a season ago, but unlike Judge he was out about ten weeks due to an injury that was ruled worse than this one.
It’s still a blow to the Yankees, though, as they will still be holding out hope of taking on the Red Sox in the division so that they can better position themselves in the playoffs. While they do have one of the deepest teams in the game and his absence won’t hurt them as much as it would hurt most teams, it is hard to see where they will be able to make up so many games on the Sox now. In other injury news, the Yankees also had starting pitcher Sonny Gray leave the game early after being hit with a come backer on the mound. Initial reports indicate his injury isn’t as severe, but further tests will be required, ending a roller coaster day for the Yankees that could be more costly than the victory they ultimately achieved.
