The Boston Red Sox will be facing a very familiar team on Friday in the American League Division Series. After defeating the Oakland Athletics by a score of 7-2, the New York Yankees have punched their tickets to the ALDS, where they will face off against their biggest foes in a five game series. How did they get there? Well, of course it was through the long ball. Manager Aaron Boone made it clear about his team’s strategy: keep the other team off the board and hit the ball over the wall. Things certainly went well for them in that regard on Wednesday night.

To start off, Luis Severino looked dazzling in the first inning, retiring the A’s in order on just ten pitches. Yankee Stadium was buzzing as Andrew McCutchen walked to bring Aaron Judge to the plate. And the big right handed slugger did not disappoint them, hammering a roped line drive over the fence to give them a 2-0 lead early on that they never really looked back from. Severino had a big, big jam to get out of in the fourth inning, but he found his way through the bases loaded situation in order to escape. And though he was taken out after that, fans will see it as a big improvement over last season where he lost control in the first inning of this game against the Twins.

With the Yankees leading 6-0 heading into the top of the eighth inning, the A’s needed something to give them a spark. Their star man, the only one in truth that they had on a ragtag team that had somehow cut their budget and improved drastically over last season’s performances, Khris Davis knocked a two run homer to right field that plated Jed Lowrie and himself. But they’d muster no more, and Giancarlo Stanton would hit a home run of his on, albeit a solo shot, in the bottom of the inning to seal it for the Yankees at 7-2. They will now face a battle of two teams that won 100 games. Let the fun begin!

Elsewhere, the defending Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals raised their banner on Wednesday against the Boston Bruins at home. And they did not let down the home faithful in their home opener, crushing the Bruins 7-0 to underline their chances to win it again this season. They had a 1-0 lead inside of 25 seconds, and it would be doubled inside of two minutes. From there, the rout was on, and it was just a matter by how much. If this keeps up, the Caps will be a hard team to beat all year long, particularly because of their exceptionally good power play.
