It may have taken a while to get his first hit of the new season, but the one Kevin Kiermaier came up with on Sunday sure was memorable. Three days into the new campaign, he was hitless, but that all changed in the bottom of the tenth with two runners aboard.
With the new extra innings rule in effect, and his team down a run after the Blue Jays had plated a run in the top half of the frame, he hit a triple to bring home two runs, giving his team a walk-off 6-5 home win that takes their record to 2-1 on the new season. It was an impressive performance on the day for the Tampa Bay Rays apart from that as well. They had given up four runs in the sixth inning, yet they kept scratching away down the stretch to level up matters. Ji-Man Choi played a large role in it, with a home run in the sixth to give them a chance and then a walk with the bases loaded in the ninth to reduce their arrears to one. Brandon Lowe’s shallow single then knotted it up and allowed Kiermaier to come through and give them the win.
