Magical Goaltending Leads Capitals to Draw Level with Golden Knights
The Washington Capitals, as history shows, might be used to being up 2-0 and then blowing series, but they wanted to prevent themselves from doing the opposite on Wednesday night against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, who had absolutely dominated them in Game 1. Thanks to Alex Overchkin play and some heroic goaltending from Braden Holtby, the Capitals were able to avoid going back to Washington down 2-0 and instead are right in this series now after stealing one from them in Vegas.
It was Vegas that made the most ideal of starts with a goal inside of eight minutes from James Neal. It looked like we could be in store for yet another romping on the night from the Golden Knights, and that would have meant a really tough ask on the Caps for the remainder of the series to get back into it. But there were other plans, and they would respond about ten minutes later, scoring thanks to Lars Eller. They would start to open up an advantage just over five minutes into the second period when Alex Overchkin scored on a power play to give them the 2-1 lead. They followed that up with another goal four minutes later from Brooks Oprik, making it 3-1 and giving them a bit of breathing room. That would be all they needed despite a goal late in the second from Shea Theodore that made it 3-2.
There would be no more goals in the third period due to the magical play of Braden Holtby in the net as well as some great defensive play from elsewhere. One particular play saw Alex Tuch of the Golden Knights skate through toward goal in a one-on-one situation with two minutes left. Somehow, just somehow, Holtby made the save in a no-save kind of spot, and that allowed them to win the game, level the series, and have a real chance at winning the Stanley Cup now. That was not the only save he had to make, of course, making some big saves under a power play period, but that will be the one remembered most, especially if they go on to win the series now.
