Star Wars fan creates battle scene inside his fish tank

A talented man has created a Star Wars scene inside a fish tank, including Stormtrooper figures and a replica of the Death Star that actually floats in the water.

Mike Patchen, from New York, USA, spent three months transforming his 250-litre fish tank into one of his favourite scenes from the 1983 film Return of the Jedi, which was the third film to be made and is the sixth in the sci-fi franchise’s chronological order.

The 30-year-old has been a fan of the specific scene since he was a child, and designed and created the underwater masterpiece from scratch using a 3D printer, his painting skills, and some figures he purchased specifically for the project.

And Mike, who designs themed aquariums for a living and shares his creations on his @tanksbymike Instagram account, has even coated all his set pieces in a “special coating” which means they’ll be able to withstand being submerged in water.

He said: “I use a special coating on items so that they are safe to place inside an aquarium.

“Normally you can not put toys, figures or painted items into fish tanks but the coating is a special rubber-like material that fully seals the items and prevents any paint from seeping into the water.

The scene includes mini Stormtrooper figures

“This has allowed me to use my creativity to have fun making specially themed aqua-scaped fish tanks.

“I designed, 3D printed and painted some of the items. I also bought most of the figures and specially coated all of them so that they could be placed inside the aquarium to create this Star Wars scene.”

As well as a Death Star and Stormtroopers in the middle of battle, the scene also includes floating TIE fighters, AT-ST models, and figures of C-3PO, R2-D2, and dozens of Ewoks to really tie together the all-out war in the scene.

Mike also said he’d been wanting to create the Star Wars-themed aquarium for some time and had been working on it as a “side project” while managing the other parts of his business.

There are also TIE fighters that float in the water

He added: “This star wars scene was one of my favourites growing up and I have been wanting to recreate it for a while now.

“Over the last few months, I’ve been working on it as a side project while managing the rest of my business.”

And the artist has had some amazing feedback from friends who can’t believe how talented he is.

“When people see the scene that I have created they tell me that it is jaw-dropping,” he said, “and that it is the most amazing thing they have ever seen!”
