Mega Star Makes US Ryder Cup Team, Serena and Nadal Advance
If you had predicted at the start of the year that Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau would all make the United States Ryder Cup team, you’d have been called crazy. But that’s exactly what happened after the team was officially announced by captain Jim Furyk on Tuesday. Each of those three were at-large picks made by Furyk, with him choosing them for specific reasons. Phil has a ton of experience and has been at 12 in a row for the red, white, and blue. Tiger Woods, is well, Tiger Woods. You get a different set of rules with him, and his play has picked back up. This will be his first appearance there in six years. And DeChambeau is just white hot. Two wins in a row and a landmark season will carry him to France with a ton of momentum. However likely it was, it’s all happened now, and the question is whether it will pay off for the USA.
A night after Roger Federer ran out of gas in the US Open, his chief rival Rafa Nadal continued to amaze. The Spaniard took on 25 year old Dominic Thiem, the #9 player in the world, and defeated him after five hours of incredible play. Having been beaten 6-0 in the first set, Nadal made history to become the first #1 seed to come back from that distinction to win. Oh, and it ended after 2AM in New York. Certainly memorable. Also moving on to the semi-finals will be Serena Williams. She moved on in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). Fellow American Sloane Stephens fell short in her quarterfinal, and thus a dream match pitting the old and new generations won’t be taking place on center court.
One of the worst bits of news on Tuesday was confirmation that Furniture Row Racing would be leaving NASCAR at the end of the current season. If you aren’t familiar, this is the defending Monster Cup champions, with Martin Truex, Jr. at the wheel. They have also boasted Kurt Busch and Erik Jones as drivers as well. Their story is a great one, but it has now been ended due to high budgets. The sport simply costs too much money now, and they realized that they would not be able to sustain their high level of performance if they continued into next season. Now they will all be looking for jobs.
Lastly, a bizarre story out of Denmark that relates to its national soccer team. There is a dispute going on over imaging and advertising that is seeing the biggest players they have essentially go on strike. Christian Eriksen, who was one of the World Cup’s star players, being one of them. And due to solidarity, lesser known players have chose to stick up for the cause. This has ended up forcing the Danes to pick amateur players and Futsal players (the equivalent to Arena League Football) for a friendly and a competitive Nations League game. It’s a crazy story, but one heck of an opportunity for those guys to play for their country.
