Not everyone stood up to the conditions at a windy Muirfield Village on Thursday in round 1 of the Memorial, but Tony Finau sure did, taking the outright lead after blazing a -6 66. He leads by one shot over Ryan Palmer and by two over Gary Woodland and Brendan Steele. Finau did so, largely, by closing in brilliant fashion.
He made seven birdies over his last 10 holes, a whale of a run considering just how much tougher the course was playing than it did a week ago at the Workday Charity Open. In total, only seven players shot under a 70 on the day, while 35 players had scores in the 60s during last week’s opening round. Tiger Woods, of course, returned to action this week for the first time in over five months, and he had a decent round, finishing up at -1 par following a 71. Bryson DeChambeau made some eyes pop off the page during a +1 round when he pummeled a drive on the first hole 423 yards. He would make birdie there, but he struggled some for the rest of the day.
