Michelle Heaton shared a striking before-and-after comparison as she discussed her alcohol addiction battle.

The Liberty X singer has been open about her sobriety, and was told she only had a few days to live at one point.

Taking to Instagram, the 42-year-old showed two snaps of herself, with one from 20 weeks ago including puffy cheeks and bloodshot eyes, beside another from today.

She began a lengthy caption: ‘This picture is not to shock, it WAS my reality! 20 weeks ago this was me – Ruined – immune system was shutting down. The second is me today – Saved – strong happy healthy.

‘It’s National Sober Day And it encourages us to celebrate Sober life and bring awareness to addiction.

‘It’s also National Recovery Month, and today supports removing the stigma associated with addiction. It opens the lines of communication that lead to better understanding. The day provides an opportunity to build educated support networks.

‘Success is more likely when systems are paved with an aware, loving, and honest cheering section.’

She continued: ‘If we stumble, aren’t we more likely to get back up again when we have a solid support system?

‘Encouragement of one day fuels more support and awareness, leading to long-term sobriety. That’s something worth celebrating! The opposite of addiction is a connection.

‘Recognising this provides a model for future generations who will be my picture one! And then the second picture demonstrates how to enjoy life alcohol-free, the day will embolden future generations to say no to alcohol.’

Adding text from the national day calendar, Michelle concluded her post with helpful links and supportive information for anyone who is in the same position, with the hashtags: ‘#soberlife #sobriety #addiction #addictionrecovery.’

The Thinking It Over singer sought professional help for her struggles, and attended The Priory earlier this year, to get better.

She recently hit a milestone of 100 days sober in August, and recalled her lowest point during an appearance on Loose Women.

‘It’s the hardest step to admit you have a problem,’ she told the panel. ‘Three months ago I was on death’s door, I had been given a couple of days [to live].

‘I was so ill, I had lost so much weight. My skin was translucent, my belly was very swollen and very hard. I was sick to drink more.

‘I made myself sick to drink more. I’d be happy when I was sick so I could drink more. It got so out of control that it controlled everything I did.’
