It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like the Mike Scioscia era in Los Angeles (or Anaheim) is coming to an end sooner rather than later. The former Dodgers player has been in charge of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for 19 seasons now, but according to reports throughout the media, he looks to be set to leave his beloved club at the end of this current season. And, perhaps a little surprisingly, it is said that it is to be his decision alone on this move.

At 60 years of age, there are two ideas that are possible. One is that he is looking to move on to a new challenge. The second is that he could be looking to move aside to help the Angels improve. He has had mixed results of late, something that has certainly confounded fans all over the country. That’s due to him boasting some of the best players in the game, like Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, though the latter of the two is rapidly declining with his increasing age.

It’s easy to see how he would come to either conclusion. Being in charge for 19 years at the club gives him the sixth longest time as a manager of a team in the history of the major leagues. While he did win a championship, way back when they captured the World Series in 2002, he has just not had the kind of success with the team of late that was expected of him. The Angels have not seen the playoff since 2014, a run that simply is unfathomable due to the relatively high salary they pay their players.

Furthermore, they have not had a winning season since 2015, and as of right now, they are two games under .500 as the current standings sit. He could well end his tenure with three straight losing seasons and four straight without a playoff run. That simply won’t do for very many teams, and especially one that spends so much. He’s still got some legs, though, if he does continue managing, so it will be interesting to see what he decides to do in due course.
