We are within 24 hours of the start of the Major League Baseball season, and it looks like we could be getting a format change. The details are developing, but it looks like MLB, who had stated that the playoff format would remain the same at 10 teams, might just be expanding that number all the way to 16 for the 2020 season.
Previously, the MLBPA had asked for 16 teams to be the number for the next two seasons, as a sort of trade off for having to play an abbreviated 60-game season this time around. We’ll see how this shakes out, but it will be interesting to see if the players even know about it ahead of their first games or not. It could make a gigantic difference in the season and how teams approach it, that much is for sure.
