Collin Morikawa controlled the opening two rounds of the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield, but after thee rounds, it looked like he had given it all away. Having shot even par on Saturday, he trailed Justin Thomas by three heading into Sunday’s final round. Somehow, some way, though, he came out on top when it mattered most.
It was all the more dramatic that he waited until the final three holes to close that three-shot gap. One lone birdie on those last three holes got him a -6 66, and coupled with two bogeys from Thomas, he was able to sneak into a playoff with both men at -19 overall. After a couple of even playoff holes, he made a par on the third when Thomas could not, earning him the victory, the second of which he’s had in 24 career starts. Not a bad way to start life on the PGA Tour, where he’s only missed the cut once (just a couple of weeks back). Viktor Hovland finished third at -15.
