Autumn is here, and, with more cosy nights in on the horizon, many of us will be looking for ways to create the perfect autumnal environment in our own homes, whether that be through a well-placed snuggly throw or a pot of warming soup on the stove. Fortunately, you won’t need to splash out too much on a fancy candle or air freshener to get a comforting seasonal scent.

One crafty mum has now shared her trick to creating the perfect, welcoming autumn scent in your home, and all you’ll need to do is take a trip to your local park.

In a video shared to TikTok, cleaning, and organising expert Jill – who goes by the username @jillcomesclean – demonstrated how to make your own DIY scented pine cones, warning against store-bought ones as these may contain harmful chemicals.

Jill instructed: “Gather some pine cones or buy unscented ones, arrange on a baking sheet and bake for one hour at 175 degrees. While they bake, mix up a spray of half a cup of distilled water and 45 drops of cinnamon essential oil.”

Once everything is ready, Jill advises popping the cones into a bag, before covering them with the spray. This bag should then be left overnight for the full effect, allowing the cones to fully absorb the cinnamon-scented mixture.

Jill, who suggested adding a bit more spray to the cones if needed, continued: “The next day, just store in a decorative container. It couldn’t be easier! You’ll be pining over these.”

With Christmas just around the corner, this simple pine cone arrangement would of course also make for a lovely festive centerpiece. You could also work your scented cones into a larger wreath or garland display, or pop them in a jar for a sweet handmade gift idea ahead of the big day.
