Although electric cars are gaining popularity, a lot of people are still worried about their practicality. For example, while the Mustang Mach-E is certainly not a small car, it could not tow a small fishing boat. It may not seem like a big deal to you, but for some it was definitely a little bit of a disadvantage. But a few upgrades just improved the towing capacity of the Mach-E.
Mach-E is an incredibly successful model for Ford. Research has shown that about 88 % of Mach-E buyers previously drove a vehicle from a different brand. This means that fun to drive, interesting design and electric mobility interests people enough to purchase the Mach-E. It comes in a few different versions, but only the all-wheel drive one was able to tow a full tonne – towing capacity of the other ones was just 750 kg. This wouldn’t be much of a problem, but the Mach-E is a great vehicle for long trips and some people may want to attach a small camper to it or a fishing boat.
Now Ford introduced a few improvements to the Mustang Mach-E. First of all, now all models have a towing capacity of 1000 kg. This is great news, because now every single Mach-E will be able to to a small or average-size fibreglass fishing boat. It is difficult to say what kind of an update that was, but it is likely nothing to do with the hardware – it was most likely a homologation and software update.
This Woelpern, general manager, Imports, Ford of Europe, said: “The towing upgrade for Mustang Mach-E is one of a number of free updates we’re continuing to make in hardware and software or through homologation to give owners the best experience possible. With towing in particular, it was a great example of us responding to customer queries, where we checked the feasibility of an increase and were able to deliver what they wanted.”
Ford updated charging software as well. It used to take 52 minutes for a Mach-E to charge from 80 to 90 % of the battery’s capacity. This update brought this time down to just 15 minutes. Ford also improved the one-pedal driving feature for even smoother performance at lower speeds. In electric cars with regenerative braking you can drive using just the accelerator pedal. Takes a little bit of getting used to, but it is really convenient. And saves power, because every time you let go of the accelerator pedal the car is putting some power back into its battery.
Mustang Mach-E, like many modern electric cars, can receive over-the-air updates. This keeps the car continuously improving over time to stay up to day with the competition. These software updates are also important for cyber security – modern vehicles are basically computers with wheels.
