‘My dog keeps aggressively humping strangers – and it’s getting dangerous’

A dog owner has taken to Reddit to complain that her pooch has started ‘aggressively humping’ her and others she meets on walks – the Labrador digs its nails into her leg when doing it

While owning a dog is extremely rewarding, it also comes with its fair share of embarrassing moments.

A dog owner has been left red-faced after her pooch suddenly started humping ‘everyone and everything’ he set his eyes on.

Explaining how her five-year-old Labrador has never shown urges quite as intense before, she admits she doesn’t know how to put a stop to his “aggressive humping”.

Speaking to Reddit, she said: “He never was this insistent until today when I took him for a walk and he started repeatedly humping my leg.

“This has never happened before. Usually he just humps the hose that is in his compound or maybe a stranger but only does it once or twice.

“I now have scratches on my leg and my trousers are ruined. It’s hard to get him off because he is huge and his nails are sharp. He will wrap his front paws around your leg and start humping.”

Admitting she might have made him “more excited” when trying to bat him away with an open umbrella, the woman admits she lost her temper with her dog because he thought she was playing with him.

“He got even more excited and he stopped listening to my sit commands,” she added. “Usually I get him to sit if he starts humping and he will stop and sit but he stopped listening after he got this excited.”

Offering advice on how to stop her dog from humping her, one user said: “Humping is often a response to excitement and stress.

“It’s possible that the open umbrella, a stressor for many dogs even if they’ve seen it a zillion times before, contributed to the dog getting extra humpy today.”

The user urged her to teach the dog “methods of relaxing and deferring”, saying putting him in a sit would work in some situations, while another option is to “train the dog to put it’s chin in your hand and look you in the eye”.

“The trick would be to notice early on when the dog is just beginning to get excited and use one of these calming methods before the dog starts humping,” they added.

“Humping strangers is a bit worrying because it suggests that your dog is a bit stressed around strangers.

“There are some good ways to counter condition this – like having people throw the dog a treat so that the dog needs to move away from them to go get it.

“You can teach the dog a more appropriate greeting behaviour, such as touching the nose to a fist for a treat – and then ask strangers to hold out a fist for the dog (be ready to reward the dog).

“To save your trousers (and legs) think about getting the dog’s claws trimmed, if relevant!

“Maybe carry treats and get in the habit of throwing a handful of treats on the floor (say ‘down’) whenever the dog thinks about wrapping its paws around your leg.”
