‘My neighbour has destroyed my garden by throwing peanuts – it’s out of control’

Most people have heard the age-old saying ‘you can’t choose your family’ but the same is true for neighbours, and unless you’re lucky enough to land friendly and welcoming folk next door, you may have been lumped with unsociable noise, pinched car parking spots or screaming children.

One person has been dealing with the turmoil of their neighbour’s strange habit, which involves her throwing ‘buckets of peanuts’ and other foods onto her lawn every day. The bizarre ritual has been attracting all sorts of animals to the surrounding neighbourhood, which the disgruntled person claims is wreaking havoc on everyone’s gardens.

Taking to Reddit to share their frustration, the complainant, who remains anonymous, says their neighbour is ‘out of control’.

They wrote: “Has anyone else had issues like this before? This older lady who lives a few houses down from me literally will not stop throwing peanuts, cat food, bird food, and whatever else she throws all over the place.

“This has been going on for about a year and it’s completely out of control. She doesn’t throw out a small amount, she will throw out buckets full several times a day.

Revealing the damage that the elderly woman’s habit is causing, the person, who seems to be based in America, continued: “The squirrels and raccoons have destroyed just about everybody’s yard in the neighborhood by digging holes.

“She also goes outside and screams at birds and the squirrels all the time for fighting”.

The Reddit poster explains that they have tried to confront the neighbour, with little success, as they say: “She’s been asked politely several times to stop, I’m probably going to write a letter to her landlord and the city because I’m so over this. This has got to stop”.

People have ran to the comments section on the post to try and offer advice to the frustrated person, with one suggesting: “Start video taping /game camera and involve Animal Control AND the Game Warden. Feeding wildlife like you say she is, is a big no no. She can get some big tickets plus costs Critter removal and possibly a few other charges”.

Another Reddit poster shared that they are having a similar experience with a difficult neighbour, writing: “We have a squirrel infestation because a neighbor treats them like they are his pets. They’ve become feral and fearless of humans, expecting food from us and getting nasty if not fed”.

A third person penned: “Record her doing it over a month long period. Then contact Game Warden”.
