‘My neighbours de-ice their car at 10:30pm – it’s driving me round the bend’

A social media user has shared their bafflement over their neighbours attempting to de-ice their car and pavement outside at 10:30pm when she’s trying to go to sleep

Neighbours can often be your best friends or your worst nightmare, but there are some who fall in between the two categories and just mildly annoy you from time to time.

One woman has found herself in a situation involving the latter after her neighbours decided to scrape ice outside at 10:30pm as she was going to bed.

Turning to the internet for some advice, the unnamed social media user shared her confusion over her next-door neighbours de-icing their car and scraping ice off the steps of their home late at night while she was trying to sleep.

In what she clarified was a ‘lighthearted’ post on Mumsnet, the anonymous person explained that they couldn’t understand why their neighbours would go to this trouble and make a racket when it would just be icy again by the time morning came.

The post read: “It’s frozen solid here, road is an ice rink. Neighbours are 60s and both retired, nice couple.

“For the past 45 mins they have both been outside in -3C scraping ice off the steps, the car and god knows what else.

“I was a bit concerned they had somewhere they needed to get to so popped out to ask if they needed help with anything but no, they aren’t going anywhere!

“I’ve since gone to bed and the loud scraping noises are driving me potty. What on earth are they doing it for?!

“Do they want to fall on the ice or get hypothermia? Or are they just trying new ways to drive me round the bend? Aaaarghhh!!”

Over 100 people replied to the post with many agreeing it was very “bizarre” behaviour.

One person said: “How bizarre, it’s just going to be back again by the time they need to go anywhere.”

Another replied: “Buy some salt and sprinkle it on their path so the ice doesn’t form. It’ll save them a job and you can keep your sanity.”

However, others were less sympathetic, with someone else posting: “I couldn’t imagine getting worked up over something as small as this tbh.”

And a different user admitted: “If they’re not going anywhere it’s a bit odd to be doing it late in the evening.”

While a fifth added: “Definitely odd behaviour. My guess is they felt the need to do some exercise but don’t like going to the gym, they need it to be socially conscious exercising, so they’re going to do the neighbourhood, but not during the day as they don’t want to be in anyone’s way. It must be this, surely.”
