National League Teams Go Up 2-0 While Astros, Red Sox Win in AL
There was a plethora of MLB playoff action on Friday, and it will have suited baseball fans very well given the fact that the weekend will be overshadowed by NFL and college football. Alas, the first game of the day pitted the Cleveland Indians at the defending World Series champion Houston Astros. From the get-go, the Astros made a bit of a slow start, along with their visitors with the teams even at 0-0 for the first three innings. But Houston’s bats came to life beginning in the fourth inning, and they would end up smacking four home runs on the day to give them a 7-2 win that saw Alex Bregman, with two RBIs on 2-3 hitting and George Springer, with a home run on 2-4 hitting, star.
The second game of the day was Game 2 of the NLDS between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Colorado Rockies. Much like Game 1 on Thursday night, the game followed the same sort of pattern. The Brewers took an early lead in the bottom of the fourth, and ended up holding it throughout the game only to extend it in the eighth inning with three more runs to give them a good cushion in the ninth. The final score was 4-0 in favor of the Brew Crew, who will now head to Colorado knowing that they need to win just once in the next three to move on. Mike Moustakas had a big night for the second night in a row, producing a hit before scoring the opening run and then driving in one in the eighth as they built up insurance.
The third game of the day was the one that was catching national headlines. The New York Yankees playing at Fenway against the Boston Red Sox is sure to gain attention, and it did so in the lead up for sure. The Red Sox did not make fans wait long to get up and yell at their bitter rivals, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after J.D. Martinez hit a three run bomb. A two-run second inning extended the lead to 5-2, and though the Yankees fought back to make it 5-4, the damage had been done and they would ultimately fall to the Red Sox in Game 1 of this ALDS series between the AL East foes.
And in the final game of the day, the Atlanta Braves once again looked awed by the moment as the Los Angeles Dodgers took a 2-0 lead in the NLDS ahead of Sunday’s meeting in Atlanta at Suntrust Park. The Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw shook off a first-pitch double by Ronald Acuna, Jr. to settle in and prevent any runs from scoring in the first. Manny Machado then hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give them an ideal start, and one from which they would not look back on. The young Braves look overmatched at this stage of their development, and the two-time NLCS champion Dodgers are closing in on reaching that round yet again after a second straight shutout of the young Bravos in a 3-0 win.
