As of Thursday afternoon, Dave Gettleman is the new general manager for the New York Giants.

Many thought that this hire would be prolonged until the offseason, but the Giants wanted to fill the spot as soon as possible. Gettleman, who has a wealth of experience in the Giants organization, will fill the shoes of Jerry Reese who was fired after the Giants’ week 13 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Gettleman was with the Giants from 1998-2012 where he served as a scout, pro personnel director and senior pro personnel analyst. He took a short break from being with the Giants organization from 2013-2017 as he served as the general manager of the Carolina Panthers before he was dismissed in July before the season even started.

While this was a heavily sought after position, there were only four interviews conducted and Gettleman was selected.

Kevin Abrams, who served as interim general manager following Reese’s firing, is expected to stay with the Giants organization as an assistant general manager.

While the Gettleman assumes a Giants team that had one of its worst seasons in franchise history, there is a tremendous upside to this team. They will likely have the No. 2 or No. 3 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft and also had a lot of the main contributors injured this year.

The main area that they Giants need to focus on is the offensive line and running back position. Both go hand in hand, but both need to be addressed as they are some of the worst units in the league.

In addition to personnel changes, Gettleman also will have the responsibility of hiring the next Giants head coach. Following a huge failure in Ben McAdoo, this move is absolutely critical in defining the Giants success in the future.
