Every team starts getting underway this weekend. The preseason ends on Sunday, Aug. 25, and NFL roster cutdown day is Tuesday, Aug. 27.

According to the team, Dak Prescott is being held out of practice Friday for precautionary reasons because of ankle soreness following the joint practice with the Rams on Thursday. Cowboys have a light workout today and he is likely to not play Sunday’s preseason game vs. Rams.

Report: Patriots releasing WR JuJu Smith-Schuster
The eighth-year pro had reportedly been struggling in training camp, and didn’t record a catch in limited action in the Patriots’ preseason opener Thursday, a win over the Panthers. New England takes on nearly $10 million in dead money by making the move now.
Smith-Schuster has also played for the Steelers and Chiefs, with whom he won a Super Bowl in the 2022 season. The 2017 second-round pick has 430 career catches for 5,048 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Joe Milton outshines fellow rookie Drake Maye in Patriots debut
While all the attention was on No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye, he only played one uneventful series for the Patriots in their preseason opener against the Panthers Thursday.
But 6th-round rookie Joe Milton? He made the most exciting play of the day with a 38-yard TD strike in the 4th quarter. Hey, why not. The Patriots won 17-3.

Confirmed: Caleb Williams will make his preseason debut Saturday
After most starters were held for Chicago in last week’s Hall of Fame Game, they will see some action Saturday against the Bills. That includes, of course, No. 1 draft pick Caleb Williams.

Falcons lose WR Rondale Moore for the season
The receiver added via a trade this offseason reportedly suffered a season-ending knee injury in Wednesday’s practice. A gut punch for a team and an offense with a lot of big goals this season under new head coach Raheem Morris and quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Report: Sam Darnold to start, J.J. McCarthy will play in Vikings preseason opener
This aligns with what Vikings have been doing throughout training camp. Darnold is the starter but the rookie McCarthy will get a “significant” amount of work in Saturday’s preseason openers vs. Raiders, per head coach Kevin O’Connell.
