Padres ‘Win’ Trade Deadline

Though a few teams moved some parts and pieces around, it is very safe to say that the winner of Major League Baseball’s trade deadline in 2020 is unquestionably the San Diego Padres. In fact, a case could have been made for them winning it prior to Monday’s events. They had already traded to bring in others to help improve them from top-to-bottom, but they got their blockbuster ace in the form of Mike Clevinger from the Cleveland Indians on this day.

They do give up a hefty sum to get him, letting go of three minor league prospects and three Major Leaguers (pitcher Cal Quantrill, outfielder Josh Naylor, and catcher Austin Hedges). However, they will see the deal as being a good one, and it certainly makes them the biggest threat to divisional rival Los Angeles. Clevinger, who was one of the two Cleveland pitchers frozen out due to breaking the team’s Covid rules, has an ERA of 3.20 over the course of the last four or so seasons. The Padres had already brought in Aaron Nola and Mitch Moreland, among others, in their wheeling and dealing as they hunt down not only a playoff spot but also a World Series.
