Flight disrupted by groaning noises over plane’s intercom

People travelling on an American Airlines flight earlier this month were left creeped out when the plane’s intercom system began playing strange moaning and groaning noises – which one passenger said sounded as though they were being made by a man and were “somewhere between an orgasm and vomiting”.

Emerson Collins shared proof of the bizarre noises in a viral video posted online, where he suggested that another passenger on the flight from Los Angeles, California, to Dallas, Texas, must have “broken into” the plane’s PA system, which is supposed to be used for flight attendants and the pilot to communicate important messages to passengers.

Speaking in the clip shared to his @ActuallyEmerson account on Twitter, the film producer and nonprofit director said: “Someone on this flight seems to have broken into the intercom system and continues to make a sound that is somewhere between and orgasm and vomiting.”

While the strange sounds continued, the intercom was then accessed by a flight attendant who made a point to emphasise how “extremely irritating” the noises were, and said staff on board the flight were trying to solve the problem.

She explained: “Ladies and gentlemen, we realise there is an extremely irritating sound coming over the public announcement. The flight deck is trying to troubleshoot and trying to turn it off, so please be patient with us. We know it is an odd anomaly and none of us are enjoying it.”

But as soon as the woman stopped talking, the sounds started up again, leaving Emerson laughing as he took in the absurdity of the situation.

And American Airlines still don’t know where the sounds came from, as Emerson captioned his video – which has been viewed over 1.2 million times – to state that when the plane landed, they were none the wiser on the origin of the noises.

He wrote: “The weirdest flight ever. These sounds started over the intercom before takeoff and continued throughout the flight. They couldn’t stop it, and after landing still had no idea what it was.”

The producer later told the LA Times that “no one looked suspicious” on the flight, so he can’t even be sure that it was another passenger behind the strange groaning sounds.

He said: “It was either someone’s unfortunate food poisoning in the bathroom or, like, someone with an uncomfortable approach to personal satisfaction. Literally, it was halfway between an orgasm and vomiting.”

To make matters even more bizarre, this isn’t the first time an American Airlines flight has been taken over by similar sounds, as Bradley Allen, a tech executive from Manhattan Beach, also told the LA Times that he experienced the sounds of someone “incapacitated by a severe gastrointestinal problem” while on a flight from New York to Los Angeles.

And another flight, this time from John Wayne Airport in California’s Orange County to Dallas, was also interrupted by similar sounds on September 18, and American Airlines spokeswoman Sarah Jantz said the company has chalked it up to “mechanical issues”.

She told the LA Times: “Our maintenance team thoroughly inspected the aircraft and the PA system and determined the sounds were caused by a mechanical issue with the PA amplifier, which raises the volume of the PA system when the engines are running.”

Sarah also added that the intercom system has no external access and WiFi connectivity.
