One of the key features of this current console generation is the ability to access your game system without needing to be in front of it. You can play PS5 games on another device by using Sony’s Remote Play feature; Xbox owners can do the same with Remote Play or game streaming.
Most importantly, you can also install games without needing to be on your console. As long as your Xbox app or PlayStation app is connected with your console of choice, you can install games wherever you are. Best of all, it’s easy to set up.
How to Remote Install Games on Xbox Series X/S
To remote install games on your console, the first thing you need to do is connect your Xbox app to your Xbox Series X or Series S. This can be done during the initial setup of the console. If you did not previously do this, you can still set it up through the mobile app.
Tap the Console button, then choose Set up a new console or Add an existing console. You will then be asked to turn on remote features; hit Enable. Hit Test remote play to have the Xbox test your setup. Once it says “you’re good to go,” hit Next. Return to your phone and give the console a name, then hit Next.
Did you previously connect your console without enabling remote features? You can set it up from Settings > Devices & connections > Remote features on your Xbox. From here, select Enable remote features. This page also gives you the option to test remote play, which you can use to make sure everything is connected.
Once your Xbox app and console are connected, and you’re logged in, all you have to do to remotely install a title is go to the game’s page in the app and click Download to console. Select the console you want the game on and hit Install to the console.
The install process should begin. Note that your Xbox does not need to be on for this process to work. The next time you turn on your console, return to the app and tap Launch on console. Select your console and click Launch to this console. Now your game is ready to play.
How to Remote Install Games on PlayStation 5
The process to set up remote features on your PS5 is similar to the Xbox, though it requires fewer steps. During the initial setup of the console, you must sign in with your PlayStation account. You can do this by entering your login info manually or by scanning the QR code on the screen to download the PlayStation app.
After signing into your PS5, make sure you have signed into the app with the same account and that your phone and console are on the same Wi-Fi network. You should then see the games and settings on your console reflected in the app.

If you didn’t do this during the initial setup, you can link the app with your console from your phone. Go to the Play tab in the app, then open the Settings gear and tap Link Console to App. Select your console then hit Confirm. If it isn’t listed, double check that you’re signed into the same account on both the console and app.
To remotely install games through the app, first make sure your console is on or in rest mode. Open the Game Library tab at the bottom of the screen to ensure the game in question is in your library. Open Games > Purchased and tap the game you want to remotely install.
Click Download to Console and the installation will begin (you should also see your PS5 listed under this button). Once it downloads, your game will be ready to play on your PS5.
