Let’s face it- very few people enjoy cleaning their bathrooms. When certain surfaces accumulate hard-to-remove stains, cleaning them becomes even more of a chore. This is particularly true of the toilet, which often eventually gets that pesky ring around the inside of the bowl. Luckily, there is an excellent hack for how to remove a toilet bowl ring.
How to Remove a Toilet Bowl Ring
A TickTock user who goes by the name raising_krazies shared a hack on her account for how to remove a toilet bowl ring. It doesn’t require any special chemicals or fancy equipment- all you need is a bit of sandpaper and some elbow grease.
In the video she explains that she did her research, and found out that the sandpaper won’t damage the toilet. As you can see in the video, she manages to remove the toilet bowl ring in just a few minutes.
How to Use Sandpaper Safely, and Still Remove That Toilet Bowl Ring
While this video does offer a good demonstration for how to remove a toilet bowl ring, there are a few important details that she left out. Keep the following rules in mind when using sandpaper to clean a surface:
1. You must use very fine-grit sandpaper
According to Mr. HandyPerson at the Chicago Tribune, a trip to your local hardware store won’t do. Even the finest sandpaper available there will likely damage your toilet and fall apart when wet. Instead, he recommends looking for them at a hobby shop, or automotive supply store. You can probably find it online as well.
“I have an assorted packet of Flex-I-Grit Fine Finishing Film, which is made by a company called Moyco in Philadelphia,” he says. “The sheets are made of polyester and are coated with different grades of extra-fine particles of aluminum oxide, silicon oxide and cerium oxide. On the finest grades, the grit is so small it cannot be felt by the fingers.”
These sheets, which he bought at an automotive store, are washable and reusable. For this reason, he’s had the same pack for years.
2. You must keep the porcelain wet
In order for this “hack” to work, the surface that you are cleaning must remain wet at all times. As long as it stays wet, the sandpaper will “float” on the surface and not scratch it .
3. Wear gloves
This, of course, is more a matter of personal preference. If, however, you’d prefer not to stick your bare hand into a toilet bowl, gloves are an excellent workaround.
And that’s it. If you’ve ever looked frustratingly at your toilet bowl and wondered how to remove a toilet bowl ring, now you know. Of course, this is purely for esthetic purposes.
As long as you’re cleaning your toilet regularly, there is nothing unsanitary about the dreaded ring. If, however, you’d rather your toilet look as clean as it is, this quick hack will do the trick.
