A run of one win in 12 games at the end of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign meant Southampton fans were perhaps the most relieved of any set of supporters to reach the end of the season.
In a slog only redeemed by the poor form of the teams below them, Saints finished 15th for a second successive year, winning just nine of their 38 games.
With the pressure on manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, Southampton will be hoping to end their inertia in 2022/23 and aim higher than bobbing just above the relegation scrap.
What’s the schedule at St Mary’s Stadium? Where will Southampton be heading in search of a brighter start this time around? Here’s how the season looks.
Southampton Premier League fixtures 2022/23
Southampton’s 2022/23 fixtures will be released on Thursday, June 16 at 9 a.m. BST (4 a.m. ET). In addition to the near month-long break for the FIFA World Cup (Nov. 14-Dec. 18), there will be two FIFA international breaks: Sept. 19-27, 2022 and March 20-28, 2023.
According to a report in The Times, a total of 16 Premier League matchdays will be played before the FIFA World Cup break, and the remaining 22 following the World Cup.
In order to squeeze in 16 Premier League matchdays before the World Cup, there will need to be two midweek slates. A midweek in August (Aug. 31 would make most sense to avoid early season fixture congestion and potential injuries) and another on Oct. 19 are the available slots.
Two midweek dates post-World Cup will also be required given the two weekends dedicated to the FA Cup in January. If the Premier League maintains its three-matchday tradition around the holidays, then Jan. 4 could be one option. The other most likely slot would be either Feb. 8 or May 3 given other competitions and the late March FIFA break. Last season the Premier League played the February midweek, leaving May open for rescheduled matches.
The Sporting News will bring you all the fixtures below as soon as they are released on Thursday, June 16 at 9 a.m. BST (4 a.m. ET).

A creditable 1-1 draw at Chelsea culminated in a 4-3 defeat on penalties in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, which starts again for Southampton in November.

Southampton Premier League projection & odds
Only Watford and Norwich City, who were both relegated, fared worse than Southampton in the final 10 games of the 2021/22 season, and bookmakers price Hasenhuttl’s side at long odds to look beyond the lower reaches of the table again.
That run included four successive defeats to end a season in which goals were a major issue for the club, with only inspirational midfielder James Ward-Prowse reaching double figures, providing 11 goals and eight assists. Southampton ended as close to the relegation zone as they did to Aston Villa immediately above them, suggesting that a top-half finish would represent significant progress in 2022/23.

Southampton best & worst Premier League finish
Part of the inaugural Premier League season in 1992/93, Southampton only finished higher than 10th for the first time by securing eighth place in 2002/03, although they were relegated to the second tier when they came bottom two seasons later.
Their best seasons came after their return to the Premier League in 2012/13. Ronald Koeman led them to their pinnacle of sixth in 2015/16, having earned seventh the previous year.
