Telegram Celebrates 700 Million Users With New Premium Subscription

Instant messaging app Telegram has surpassed 700 million monthly active users, and is celebrating with the launch of a premium subscription tier.

Telegram Premium, teased earlier this month by CEO Pavel Durov, invites users to unlock exclusive features like faster downloads, additional stickers and reactions, improved chat management, etc., while existing functions remain free to everyone.

“The contributions of premium subscribers will help improve and expand the app for decades to come, while Telegram will remain free, independent, and uphold its users-first values, redefining how a tech company should operate,” according to a blog announcement(Opens in a new window). Pricing hasn’t been officially revealed, but TechCrunch believes(Opens in a new window) it will be between $4.99 and $6 per month.

Premium features include 4GB uploads (up from 2GB) and unlimited storage in the Telegram Cloud. You do not need a membership to download extra-large documents, though it would come in handy now that premium users can download media at their network’s “fastest possible speed.”

Telegram Premium also comes with double the app limits, so subscribers may follow 1,000 channels (500 for free), create up to 20 chat folders (10 for free) with up to 200 chats each (100 for free), add a fourth account, pin 10 chats in the main list, and save as many as 10 favorite stickers. It’s also possible to write a longer bio (with link), add more characters to media captions, and access up to 400 of your favorite GIFs.

There’s also full-screen animations, premier stickers, and a handful of new emoji reactions (including a clown face, hotdog, and whale); tools for organizing chats; animated profile pictures; and a special blue-star badge signifying you’re part of the Telegram Premium club. One final reason to consider subscribing? You’ll no longer see sponsored messages in public channels.

“While we are going to release more exciting features for Premium subscribers, we will keep implementing free features available for everyone,” the blog said, highlighting new improvements like join requests for public groups, verification badges in chats, an animated screen for external sharing, improved bot descriptions, etc.
