A dating expert has shared the tell-tale signs that former Love Islander’s Chris Taylor and Maura Higgins weren’t meant to be.
The couple recently broke the news that they’ve called it quits after being together for six months as they “work better as friends.”
Chris and Maura, who met during season five of ITV’s hit matchmaking show, became an item in November 2020 during a trip to Dubai.
But apparently, according to Hayey Quinn, Match’s dating expert, there were clear signs that the duo wasn’t to be – from the very start of the show to their mutual decision to end their relationship.
Sign 1 – No initial spark
“When Maura and Chris met in the Love Island villa there was no initial spark between the couple,” pointed out Hayley.
Instead of gravitating towards each other, Maura first set her sights on Tommy Fury before being rebuffed and moving on to Curtis Pritchard; whilst Chris had a brief romance with Harley Brash before the pair were booted from the villa.
She said: “Whilst attraction can grow, an initial romantic spark is a practical way to navigate whether love is on the cards.”
Sign 2 – They were encouraged by their fans
Despite spending plenty of time together, it was Maura and Chris’s fans who kept insisting they’d make ‘the perfect couple’.
Hayley says it’s possible that the former couple may not have got together in the first place if fans hadn’t pressured them to have a ‘happy ever after’.
Sign 3 – It turned romantic during lockdown
Hayley continued: “A lot of people formed lockdown romances – the nights were drawing in, meeting new people became incredibly difficult and no one had a social life, with everything going on coupling up with someone familiar started to look like a great idea.
“Perhaps Maura and Chris are no different to so many people who ‘turbocharged’ their relationship. They coupled up at the height of lockdown to provide some support to one another, but who are now splitting as lockdown begins to ease.”
Sign 4 – They looked so in love online
Hayley urges people not to believe everything they see online, as it might not always be genuine.
“From being very open about their sex lives to posting loved up #couplegoal pictures, Maura and Chris looked at every part of the happy couple online,” she continued.
“However, sometimes when people need to publicly affirm their love, it can mean they didn’t have 100% confidence in the relationship behind closed doors.”
Sign 5 – It was a joint decision
Maura and Chris started as friends, and have ended as friends, Hayley mentioned.
Adding: “Whilst friendship is a great basis for a relationship, perhaps ultimately it was the lack of spark and difficulty turning their friendship into a romantic relationship that made this couple split.”
